I remembered how they approached his Muslim-Arab co-worker, cooing, "What can we do about the high rate of murder in the Arab sector?" And all sorts of other comments to show how much they care.
They wanted Palestinians to have their own state — and to help the Palestinians in every way.
"It's real," he said. "They all hate the Arabs now."
"Really?" I said.
"Really. They literally hate them. They all say they want to vote for Ben Gvir."
Interesting. Ben Gvir represents the right-wing religious Zionist party. These anti-religious former Leftists aren't even interested in voting for the secular Right, but for the religious-Zionist Right.
"But they're lost," he added. "Now that their eyes have been opened, they don't know what to do."
That made sense; been there and done that.
Regarding the fundamental Jewish idea of sur meh'ra v'aseh tov (turn from evil and do good), the "turning from evil" can be self-evident, but where to go from there? The aseh tov (do good) isn't always so clear. Sure, sometimes the aseh tov comes first and stands as a guiding light from the turning from evil.
Yet other times, aseh tov sometimes takes a lot of soul-searching and reading the right books and listening to the right people.
Song of the World: "Where, O Where has My Little Kapo Gone?"
Everyone else thinks it's business as usual:
"Yep, they murdered some Jews again in really horrible ways. But hey, that's just because they're angry. And also because some Jews erected some structures in the hills of Judea without explicit permission from the U.S. government. Sure, the video clips I saw sickened me and made me feel bad for the Jews — after all, I'm a nice, sensitive, and virtuous person — but my main sympathies lie with the barbaric perpetrators in Gaza. So, how about forgiving, forgetting, and continuing to demonize the Right while playing up the plight of the Gazan Arabs and giving them stuff, eh? Hello? Hello? Anybody out there?"
It will be a rude awakening when they finally realize their kapos and political drudges no longer exist (or exist as a handful of hangers-on, rather than as a massive fanbase).
